Ubuntu is a complete operating system for your computer, and
is often used instead of Microsoft Windows because Ubuntu:
Can cost hundreds of dollars
less.
Has virtually no spyware or
virus issues.
Can still run on older
computers where newer versions of Microsoft Windows won't.
Has free and paid support available.
Ubuntu, the same Linux operating
system now offered on new Dell computers, has several
"wizards" like are commonly found in Microsoft Windows
to help along the way. Ubuntu has been describes as being more
like what Microsoft Vista promised to be in early designs but
fell short of actually attaining. Ubuntu, or any of it's
variations, should be fairly easy to use for anyone who has ever
used a Microsoft or Macintosh computer.
Ubuntu may also
have the easiest installation of any top operating system on the
market. Ubuntu can be used as a LiveCD which also allows
installing, but there is also an "Alternate
Installation" disc you can get if you have
an older computer that doesn't have enough memory to use the Live
disc.
The Ubuntu
family comes in several variations. Ubuntu is the
standard which uses the Gnome Desktop, as does
Edubuntu, a
version designed specifically for educational environments.
Kubuntu is
perhaps more "windowsish" and uses the K
Desktop Environment. Xubuntu
uses the lighter and faster XFce Desktop which
is great for older slower computers.
